Philippi

Friday we visited the Baptistry of Lydia and the ancient city of Philippi alongside the Via Egnatia, the major road that connected Philippi to other cities and Paul traveled on his journeys. Paul went down to the riverbank outside Philippi when he first arrived, thinking people may be meeting there for prayer. Paul met Lydia, who became the first European woman converted to Christianity. Paul baptized her and this is commemorated with a church and memorial.

The ancient city was built by king Philip II and the first structure was the theater. When the Romans occupied the city, they converted the theater to a pool to showcase naval battles of the Roman fleet.
The forum is an open gathering place for people to come make political decisions and announcements, as well as a place for shops. This is where Paul most likely spoke on a raised platform as many people would be available to hear his message.
This is traditionally and religiously known to be Paul's prison. The story in Acts 16 including Silas would have happened here. After an earthquake, Paul and Silas brought the guard keeping watch over them to follow Christ.
Overall, it was a great day in Philippi. Not only did we have fun, but it impacted us religiously as well. As we left the baptismal site and the gift shop owner tried one last sales pitch, Tim was heard to say "I'm trying to have a spiritual experience here!" As you can tell, we enjoyed the visit immensely!
